Savoury snack manufacturer, Calbee UK, is celebrating a successful first year in the UK having taken an innovative and flexible approach to setting its foundations ready for future growth.
The company, which is the first European subsidiary of £1.2bn Japanese savoury snack supplier Calbee Inc, entered the UK market in 2014 and is based at Regus’ Leeds Thorpe Park centre.
Calbee has established the Leeds workspace as a flexible base for its UK management team, providing 24 hour access 7 days a week at a location which benefits from close links to the M1 and M62. The company is headquartered in Leeds and supports the opening of its market leading manufacturing facility in Deeside.
The flexible workspace service provided by Regus enables companies to take a small space without committing to a long-term lease, and then expand or contract the workspace as required. This low-risk strategy means that companies can test the water in a new location without high value commitments to real estate. It is this approach that is helping Calbee UK to establish the business within the UK market.
Calbee now employs more than 50 members of staff in the UK and is going from strength to strength. The company has ambitious targets with aspirations to achieve sales of £65m and to become one of the leading suppliers of healthier savoury snacks by 2020.
Richard Robinson, Managing Director of Calbee UK, comments: “The location of the offices and in particular access to the M1 and M62 motorways made it an obvious choice for Calbee UK. We also required the flexibility to move to larger sized units when required. Permanent, fixed offices simply don’t give you this freedom.
“The ‘plug and play’ element of Regus’ workspace meant that we were able to move straight into the building and start work. There was no need to have electricians or builders on site during what was an incredibly important time for us. Similarly, meeting rooms, catering, IT and all the other amenities that can take months to arrange were already set up and immediately available. We are able to focus solely on business growth.”
Richard Morris, UK CEO, Regus adds: “The increasing globalisation of business means that companies are looking for quick solutions to expansion requirements.
“Just as working lives are becoming less rigid and less 9-5, so workspaces are adapting to suit today’s worker.”
