If you are by any chance into Formula One you may have noticed that the Renault F1 team have a new sponsor adorning their front wing – and it is a company you are unlikely to have heard of.
YotaPhone is a Russian company who plan to launch into the already crowded and competitive UK mobile phone market in the late spring or early summer following a December rollout in their home country. Their first product is certainly different and could well have a use for sales professionals. For the YotaPhone features not one but two screens, one on each side of the phone.
On one surface there’s a regular LED colour screen that, as we know, is pretty to look at but soaks up battery time like nobody’s business. It’s the other screen that might be of interest for this is an e-ink black and white screen like those used on e-reader devices. The advantage of the e-ink screen is that it draws very little power and the image can be retained even when the screen is off. Pictures, charts and maps, etc, can be flipped from one screen to the other, enabling information to be displayed for as long as you want it on the always-on e-ink side.
For example, you could log into your Google account then flip tomorrow’s appointments onto the always on display where they can stay as long as you like without using up juice.
The phone is perhaps a bit chunkier than some but the Gorilla Glass curved e-ink screen allows a tapered back that looks quite appealing.
No UK price has been set yet but the launch cost was about €400 – competitive enough perhaps to make it a contender when it does arrive.
