Woodward Lewis has announced the launch of Hidden Insights®; a ground-breaking way of helping business to make breakthroughs by discovering exceptional but hidden working practices already being used by employees and turning them into the norm.
This taps into ‘localised’ expertise and knowledge, whether in sales teams, or with frontline staff, helping business overcome barriers to growth.
All businesses have outliers, whose unorthodox methods are enabling them to work more efficiently than their peers. However, uncovering these practices is difficult; the outliers are either unaware they are acting exceptionally or do not wish to share their methods as, although they are delivering the right results, they might stretch official rules. Hidden Insights® turns this on its head. It discovers and shares these remarkable practices, providing the wisdom to help business meet its goals. It creates quick wins within existing resources, creating sustainable positive change, constructively challenging constraints using data, while managing risk.
Hidden Insights® is a five-step facilitation process that engages employees and recognises that individual difference is a resource. It is not a ‘best practice’ or benchmarking model, which creates change through external assessment or comparisons with other organisations. It is not top-down, which creates resistance and requires time-consuming management policing. The employees own the process, working at a high level of detail. They collect and use data that belongs to them, not management, and find the small differences in practice and behaviour that create an enormous impact.
Once these unusual methods have been established they are shared in a “learn-by-doing” way, making people motivated and enthusiastic for the change. Hidden Insights(R) re-draws structural relationships and builds empowerment and a sense of personal responsibility. This is not only an effective approach but it is i cost-effective because it uses existing employee wisdom, making them the gurus, filtering out practical, common-sense solutions that not only work but make people feel good. While it makes the employees the gurus and uses their wisdom, the process also allows clear boundaries to be set and the new ideas to be filtered before being disseminated throughout the organisation.
Hidden Insights® stems from Positive Deviance, a method used across the globe to make small changes that lead to significant improvements. It helped exceed sales targets in pharmaceutical giant Merck and in the US it has generated up to a 73% reduction in the transmission of MRSA in three hospitals in months rather than the two years it took a parallel Toyota Productions System project to achieve a 50% reduction (Pascale Sternin & Sternin 2010). At Goldman Sachs, learning from outliers among its 300 wealth advisers and disseminating their successful practices among a community of peers has become the “new normal”
Jane Lewis, director, Woodward Lewis says: “In every organisation there are people who get their job done successfully, and more efficiently. Their unconventional methods – whether considered oddball or not – hold the key to business success. Hidden Insights(R) provides an entry point to any business problem and uses your most valuable resource: your social capital. It helps realise the Holy Grail of employee engagement and by using hidden wisdom and giving employees more than just a voice, but a genuine impact on the bottom line. The approach stems from Positive Deviance, which has been used to tackle an array of difficult problems globally and companies have seen this approach creating quick wins already.”
Woodward Lewis has already worked with several organisations to create sustained behavioural change for the benefit of staff and customers (finding up to 30% more productive time) and is currently working to align and improve the support provided by over 50 different agencies to troubled families. It has worked with Home Office and several local authorities on Hidden Insights(R) projects. Woodward Lewis has developed and provides tailored 12 and 16 week programmes for organisations, licensed facilitator training and train-the-trainer events.
